Pressurized heavy water reactor uses heavy water in a nuclear reactor and used as a coolant or neutron moderator. It uses natural uranium as a fuel. This coolant is kept under pressure for avoiding boiling and forming steam bubbles. It avoids the need of enriched fuel as it has low absorption for neutrons which increases the neutron economy of the reactor. Moreover, the heavy water is expensive than the light water and its enhanced neutron economy allows the reactor to operate without fuel enrichment facilities. This enhances the ability to use alternative fuel cycle.
